Litter theme :)

There were several in the running but in the end I think it's best to keep it simple. So we're continuing the "clue" trend and going with a MYSTERY theme. Hopefully it'll be nice and broad and we can get some fun names out of it.

Because of the way the AKC has left giant loopholes in the registration process, all the puppies will be registered at once and then transferred to their new buyers. I still plan on letting people name their own puppies if at all possible, but if puppies are unsold by nine weeks or so I'll name them. So I need a bunch of great names!

I was hoping to have another couple of things (fun things!) today, but I am seriously to the point of choking out WordPress like a scene from a bad soap opera (or maybe an awesome soap opera) and nothing is ready. Stay tuned.

Naturally, you must name one Miss Scarlett in the Library, and another Poirot

    Blacksheep's The Butler did it

What about Agatha?  After Agatha Christie one of the best mystery writers ever.
Have to say I am a Border Collie person but I always have one small dog.  I have always been attracted to the cardigan corgies and maybe one day I can get one from you.  I really love how you raise your pups.

I forgot to list Barnaby Jones. Another classic TV detective.

Have to include C. Auguste Dupin or La Chevalier in there somewhere. Could always add Mycroft, Watson, or Morairty as well.

Since we are continuing the "fictional detective theme" (Holmes and Watson) with the Chase/Phoebe repeat, I hope you'll work more toward the Clue game character names or other mystery solving techniques.  It would be a shame to have two litters with the same theme on the ground at the same time.

Oh, and you must use Gal Noir for a girl. MUST. You know it is the best name ever.

Wish I knew more about mysteries. I’ve never been a mystery reader, but I LOVE all the suggestions!

I do like the Clue boardgame names, Blacksheep Colonel Mustard, Blacksheep Miss Scarlett, and etc. Our puppy had a color name in her litter, to go with her rickrack collar, so it would be an easy extension to choose Clue character names. If you run out of character names, as you will with luck, you can move on to Blacksheep In the Conservatory, and Blacksheep With the Candlestick.

I also like Blacksheep Elementary My Dear, call name Elly. But that does launch you into the whole Holmes thing, which may be too derivative.

Love all the suggestions so far, but I have one thing to add: if you are going to have a Nero Wolfe, you HAVE to have an Archie Goodwin too! :)

There are also some great, contemporary female mystery characters (since most of the older ones tend to be male): Kate Shugak, Mary Russell, Kate Martinelli, Kinsey Milhone… (and for anyone who hasn’t already read them, if you like mysteries, I highly recommend the Kate Shugak series by Alaskan author Dana Stabenow).

Can’t wait!! Fingers and paws crossed!!

Blacksheep SWMBO would make me happy forever!

I like Blacksheep’s Agatha. But am not a huge mystery reader either. Oh, maybe Blacksheep’s Nancy Drew? Or Blacksheep’s Hardy Boy?
Also, I’m beginning to think it will be 5 puppies. Dont know why. Clue looks huge but she is a smallish girl. So, yeah, 5 puppies. Can’t wait!!

I’ve always thought Dashiell was a great name for a dog since it can be shortened to Dash if so desired. Of course, being a sighthound person, I thought it too much of a cliché to name a Whippet or Greyhound Dash.

I also prefer that the registered name should refer to, but not specifically include the call name. With that in mind, here are a few of my suggestions:

Blacksheep’s Red Harvest, The Glass Key, or The Thin Man (or any of Dashiell Hammett’s works) – Dashiell (Dash)
Blacksheep’s The Maltese Falcon – Sam Spade (or Sam or Spade)
    Blacksheep’s Nemesis – Moriarty

    Or some mystery/detective novel themes:

    Blacksheep’s Least Likely Suspect
    Blacksheep’s Reconstruction of the Crime
    Blacksheep’s Inside Job
    Blacksheep’s Plot Twist
    Blacksheep’s Bungling Constable

I’ll post more as I think of them.

As your daughter, I would suggest
    Blacksheep Cardigans’ Red Herring
Blacksheep Cardigans’ Witness to the Crime
Blacksheep Cardigans’ I’ve Got A Hunch

    Some totally random suggestions:

    Blacksheep’s Key Witness
    Blacksheep’s Hot on the Trail
Blacksheep’s Olivia Benson (hat tip to Law and Order!)
    Blacksheep’ s Lenny Briscoe (ditto)
Blacksheep’s Thin Man (maybe not the best choice…)
    Blacksheep’s Smoking Gun
    Blacksheep’s Girl Detective
    Blacksheep’s Madame X
    Blacksheep’s Femme Fatale

PS: Love, love, love Meriweather’s suggestions.

I Googled “mystery” and found an online game called ‘Shades of Mystery’ which I think would be great for a blue pup. It would be completely awesome for a cryptic blue but, we won’t go there!

Kinsey Malone (Sue Grafton ABC mystery series)

I second Poirot! And will throw Suchet in there as David Suchet is the finest Poirot ever. How about “Barnaby” after Inspector Barnaby from “Midsomer Murders”? Yes, I love Brit Dramas!
